How can I get an animated Gif to work in Word?

I usually use OpenOffice which allows the animted gifs to be seen, but
in Word - which I have to distribute the file as a .doc, it is just a
static gif - can I change this somehow so the user will see the
animated gif actually animated?

The only thing you could do would be to ask users to go to "File > Web
preview".
