I wasn't clear. The thing they are seeing is a "Flag". It's a display
artefact, not a character: it's not even in the document file at all. YOU
can't "remove" it, because it doesn't exist
However, THEY can make it disappear by setting their display to not show it.
In Master Document view, there is an extra flag appears showing that the
text following it is in a subdocument, as well as the flag that shows that a
given paragraph has a text flow override applied.
Both will go away if they view the document in Print Layout View with
Show/Hide turned off.

The extra character does show when they open the document in WORD. If
I first open the document in BBedit and "Zap Gremlins" which removes
hidden characters and non ASCII characters, there is no problem either
viewing or printing the document at the other end. Is there a way to
"Zap" the gremlins in Word 2004?
