I'm sorry, you don't give us enough information. And I
don't understand at all what you mean by "the default is no
brackets", nor what unlinking field codes has to do with
anything. Please tell us what you're starting with, what
you hope to achieve, and how VBA comes into the picture.

Can you try writing your question from the point of view of someone who has
not the faintest idea what you're referring to? In Word the 'default
contents' is a blank page. Obviously you have something other than that in
mind .. but what? Are you asking for help with the Bullets and Numbering
dialog? --- and if so, where does VBA come in?

Word simply provides no means of setting up a Table of Contents with
parentheses round the page numbers. Without parentheses is not just a
dafault, it is the only way of displaying page numbers.

Your only option, having created the table of contents, is to unlink it
(e.g. by pressing Ctrl-Shift-F9) and then putting in the parentheses
yourself.
