how can i get the sound icon back on my desktop i have no sound

can anyone help ia'm running winnt4 on my pc the problem there is no sound
comming from the speakers only faintly with errors there are no active mixer
devices available you may install or activate mixer devices from control
panel.

The other error is a configuration or hardware problem has occured check you
your hardware and systemsettings and try again tried all these things still
not working.

Please can you help as i have not much sound comming from my speakers.
