How can i insert a symbol to a drop down box menu in word XP

I am trying to insert a check mark symbol to a drop down menu in word xp

I'm guessing you want to create a custom menu command that includes a check
box to indicate the command state -- like the View > Rulers command.

The only way I can think to do this is to control the button image in VBA so
it toggles between the two images (unchecked and checked). I can't find any
property of a menu command control that specifies that it has a check box.
