How can I insert connectors in a Word 2003 doc already created?

I have a document that is already created and simply want to insert some
arrows connecting textboxes. But I cannot seem to activate my autoshapes
functions without inserting a blank drawing canvas on top of my document
which entirely defeats my intentions. There must be some simple resolution to
this, no? Thanks.
