How can I make Excel background transparent for importing in Word?

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

In Office 2000 it was easy to place an excel sheet into Word. The background of the Excel file was transparent. But in Office 2008 suddenly it is white. How can I make it transparent again?
