How can I make large posters for my classroom?

Publisher?
Word is not a good choice for posters. Serif has a free draw program, it may be
worth a try.

Just an FYI - Although Mary's suggestion of Publisher is better you can also
do that sort of thing in PowerPoint. Word is not a good choice for several
reasons, two of which are that you're limited to 22" square page size and
that it's not really "freeform" with regard to placement of graphics & text.

If you must use Word & 8.5 x 11 is sufficient you might look into using the
Templates available for Word. Accessing them & which you may be able to use
depends on which version of Word you're using - always a good idea to
mention that in any post. {Use the large Message field rather than just
filling in a Subject.}
