How can I modify existing shapes?

I want to create a shape using one of the existing Visio ones as a template.

How can I make a copy of a shape and then modify it without affecting the
original one?

1. Open the stencil of the shape you want to copy.
2. menu File -> Shapes ->New Stencil
3. click on the shape you want to copy
4. paste into new stencil
5. edit
6. save

`Paul,

Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.
What you have suggested works fine. However, when I try to modify the shape
by ungrouping it, there is a dialogue which tells me the shape is protected.

How can I get over this? I cant seem to modify the shape with this
protection in place.

Ungrouping some shapes can cause the whole shape to fall apart !
But you don't want to that !

menu Format - Behavior
and in the Group behavior section set Selection to Group First

and
menu View -> Master Explorer Window
