How can I open a claris works file created on a mac in word?

With difficulty.

I think Word's File | Open, Recover Text From Any File will pull out the
text, presumably that's the essential content.

If you want layout and formatting, life gets harder.

Where did this file come from? If someone sent it to you recently, write
back and tell them they need to use AppleWorks to do a Save As RTF and send
you the RTF. Actually, tell them to use the OS to Print as PDF and send you
the PDF, if you don't need to edit.

If you have 800 old clarisworks files from the days when you owned a Mac
that now you want access to, it may be worth a commercial solution: DataViz

Alternatively, borrow a friend's Mac.
