how can i open a folder in the drop down menu not in my notebook

i want to be able to save my onenote files in folders not in "my notebook"
but at the same time be able to see them in the drop down menu in "my
notebook." i think i had previously done this whereby there are shortcuts to
the folders created in "my notebook" but after copying the files to my new
computer, i have not been able to see my 'external' folders in the drop down
menu.

please advice. thanks!

In the OneNote UI, folders have been replaced with something called Section
Groups. they are folders, just the name and the icon has been changed. if
you create a folder through the file system under one of your notebooks, it
will show up in onenote as a section group.

i'm not sure what "onenote ui" is. i currently use onenote 2003. i am able
to create subfolders in the 'my notebook' folder through the file system so
that they appear in the drop-down menu. however, i really want to be able to
have these subfolders in a folder OTHER THAN 'my notebook' and still be able
to open them in onenote and see the subfolders in the onenote drop-down menu.
i'm not sure if that is clear.

Ok, now I understand. I believe with 2003 you can use Open > Folder to open
a folder that contains .one files and see those from inside of onenote. With
2007, you can't do this exactly the same way. Instead, you would Open >
Notebook, which would open the same folder as a Notebook (just a different
metaphor we use now inside of OneNote). And inside of that notebook, you can
have more folders, but again, inside of OneNote they are called Section
Groups instead of folders.

Did that answer your question?

it would, except i do not seem to have a "folder" open under "open". i just
have "open..." and it only seems to open sections, not folders. is there
something missing from the version of onenote that i have?

I am more than slightly confused. When I check OneNote 2003, I don't have
File--> Open..., I have File--> Open followed by an arrow. When you slide
over to the arrow, there should be two items on that list: "Section...." and
"Folder...". Using the folder option should let you open a directory as a
folder.

I am wondering... When you re-installed on the new computer, did you install
the service packs? If not, does that fix any of the access problems?
