how can i open in word DOTX files

Somehow regular word files became dotx files and open in word 2003 in
jiberish. What i do to retrieve these files

Dotx are Word 2007 format files. Have you downloaded the free Office 2007
Compatibility pack and installed it? That will let you open dotx format.

However, why have all your docs become dotx as dotx is the new template
format, so I am confused why docs should become dotx instead of docx.

I have downloaded the free Office 2007 Compatibility pack and also installed
the 60 day trial Office 2007 Professional, and I still can't open the dotx
file. I am receiving the following message: "dotx is not a valid Win32
application". How can I resolve this?

You only needed to do one or the other, not both. You still didn't answer
the question: why did all doc files become dotx files (word 2007 templates)?
If you were using Word 2003 and had doc files, your computer did not even
know about Word 2007 format files. Something must have happened to your
system. Files do not spontaneously change file extensions. Did you move them
on some type of external drive? Did you install something? Have you got a
virus?
