How can I open Word or any Word file. Have WORD 2000 and XP Home

I have MS Word included as part of MS Works 2000. In the past 24 hours I have
been unable to open WORD or any Word document. I have visited your update
site and tried downloading several updates for MS Word 2000 and in each case
what appears after each installation is:
"The expected version of the product was not found on your system".

My original OS was Windows Me, but I upgraded to XP Home Edition some months
ago, and this is the first time I have had a problem as described.
Please advise course of action, if possible.
