How can I re-activate without my code?

My HDD has crashed, I bought a new laptop, (How) can I re activate office
when I have lost my activation code?

Where did you get the key code from origonally?
If it was preinstalled on your PC, then in probability it was an OEM version
that died with the PC

I downloaded it from microsoft but can't find a record of it online - my
bank statement says it was paid to "DRI*microsoft"

No record of it in either digital river or digital locker. I tried the help
and support in microsoft but they want £45 or the code!!!

No help now, but just goes to show how important backups of data & software
downloads & keys are
