How can I reduce the size of rtf files with linked graphics?

We have a CRM application that requires all our documents are saved in RTF
and we have to link graphics as all documents are printed to plain paper, so
include logos etc. We recently discovered that Word 2003 bloats the rtf files
from say 53kb to 18mb. This is most noticeable on documents edited by Word97.

I am aware of this problem but can we expect a fix or is there an
alternative editor we can use rather than Word - that still allows all the
formatting and precise graphic placement we need to produce professional
documents?

The problem was not apparent when all our users used Word97.

Hi John,

If you've checked the field for the linked graphics (alt+F9 for inline with text graphics) and are sure that the /d ('don't also
embed a picture copy') switch is present then see if this registry change makes a difference.
