How can I reduce the time it takes to start a slideshow

Using PPT 2003 and burning to a CD, I get the splash screen, followed by a
lengthy pause while the cd is being read. After about what feels like three
minutes, the show starts.
I am testing this on a Winxp pro machine with a PIV, 2.4 GHz processor and
512 MB of RAM.
But my customers will probably not want to wait that long. Can I put up some
screen to say this is loading or something else? Suggestions?

Off the top of my head (and, therefore, untested) --

How about putting 2 files in the autorun CD playlist. The first could be a
very simple "loading" file. You could link from it to the larger file, or
maybe poke around in the settings in package for CD to see if there's a
better way to specify it.

Thinking aloud.
Is it not just the first slide that is taking the time?
If so put a simple "loading" slide with an autotransition to the genuine
first one after, if necessary, a fixed delay.
