How can I remove extra lines between paragraphs

G

Geoff Hassell

I am using Office XP. Is it possible to remove extra lines between
paragraphs in a large document. Or, better still is it possible to format
the template or actual document to do this automaticallyas you type.

I have looked in "Format" but can not seem to see an answer.

TIA

I'm not absolutely certain what you mean but I think you can check if
I am right by switching on "display formatting". The icon looks like ¶
(ALT+0182) tho' I won't guarantee that the symbol will arrive
properly. Anyway, the extra lines will probably be indicated by seeing
this paragraph mark by itself on a line and you can simply replace
^p^p by ^p in all, doing it more than once if necessary.

Are they really extra lines, or are they the optional spacing at the end (or
start) of paragraphs ?

Go to Format > Paragraph... and look at the Indents & Spacing tab. Under
spacing you can specify Before and After spacing to alter the space you get
when you hit the Return key to end a paragraph. By default these are usually
set to 0 pt.

Thanks for both suggestions but none worked. The documents seem to have a
mind of their own and add extra spacing when I'm not looking. I basically
want to restrict the space between paragraphs to a single line and very
often 2 or 3 appear.

Thanks anyway for your suggestions.

Could the problem be caused by an applied Style? You *can* remove
Styles from a document; see Help on Delete Style.

Jim.
