How can I see names of removed attachments?

In Lotus Notes, when attachments are deleted from an email, it shows that
that happened something like this:

[MyFileName.xlx deleted by MyName]

When I delete attachments in Outlook (in order to save space) I can't tell
that they were ever there. Is there a way to handle this?

There are third party tools on slipstick that will remove the attachment
from the mail to a location on the HD, whilst maintaing a link in the
origonal mail.

When opening the window to display the e-mail (so you can right-click on
the attachment to remove it), use the Edit -> Edit Message menu to add
your own comment when you consider it important enough to note that the
attachment used to be there.

One of the features of Outlook is that it supports macros written by 3rd
parties to alter or add to its behaviors. An example of one is at
http://www.sperrysoftware.com/Outlook/Attachment-Save.asp. There are
other solutions already hinted at by the other respondents to your post.
