How can I select and recolor only part of a picture?

I would like to block out a part of a picture by selecting it and then
recoloring it to appear the same color as the immediate surronding area. It
is not the entire picture that I need to recolor put only a small part.

What extension is the picture? For instance, is it a .wmf or .jpg? If it is the
former you can ungroup the image and re-color different segments. If the picture
is a bitmap (.jpg, etc.) you will have to use an editing program similar to
Paint.
This article is for Publisher, but it works the same in Word. Word 2007 is a bit
different.
