How can I set a task to occur (X) time before another task?

Kind of like a precursor but lets say I have a construction project.

I need the superintendent to order roof panels 4 weeks before the roof
installation. Roof installation is set by precursor of roof framing.

How can I add the task "order panels" to always occur 4 weeks before the
changing date of roof installation.

Probably the easiest way is to set a 4 wk lag between the 2 tasks.
Create the link between the 2 as you normally would. You can change the
link in any view where the relationship is displayed, i.e., a
predecessor or successor field. Or by double clicking on the link in
the Gantt (if you have links turned on) or the Network Diagram. In the
Link box, at the lower right is a "Lead" box where you can adjust the
duration. Put in 4 wks.
Of course you could also put in a 4w task called "Delivery" or some
such thing.
Hope this helps.

I find it helpful to think of "predecessor" as meaning "controlling" and
"successor" as meaning "controlled" in these contexts. So "Install Roof" is
the predecessor since its schedule controls when you need to perform the
successor "Order Panels" even though the Install comes after the Order in
the time sequence. Link "Install Roof" as the predecessor with "Order
Panels" as the successor. Set the link type to SF, Start-to-Finish (the
opposite of the normal FS), so the start of the predecessor links to the
finish of the successor. Add a 4 week lead time (lag time = -4 weeks).

Exactly, but I have a major aerospace prime as a customer who rejects this
link entirely. I use a SS link with a negative lag to link the predecessor
(order) to the successor (install). They don't like the use of lags much
either, but this is the real world.
