How can I set MS Word in MS Office 2003 to show fractions eg 2/3

My MS Word program is set to show the usual fractions as fractions on a split
line but when I type such fractions as 2/3rds or 4/5ths they do not show as
such.

If you look at your autocorrect settings you'll see that some common
fractions, entered as individual characters (eg '1' + '/' + '2'), will
autocorrect to the corresponding character in the default character set. You
can do the same with any other fractions, if you can find a font that
contains single characters for the fractions you want to use. The standard
unicode set has the thirds and eighths at positions 2153 - 2158.
