How can I stop computer going online every 15 minutes?

My computer goes online every 15 minutes without my help. I use MS Office
2000 and XP. I have to cancel every 15 minutes, no matter what I'm working
on. I would like to shut off this automatic timer/hookup. I had someone
check all my settings and he said that they were OK. How can I stop the
computer from going online every 15 minutes?

You would need to determine what you have installed to do this. Perhaps
you have told e-mail to check for new messages every 15 min. We can't
know what you did, only you would.

well, the first thing I can think of is a setting in your email program.
You did not mention if you were using Outlook or Outlook Express (OE).
I'll assume OE here - check on your settings this way -

Open OE.
Choose TOOLS from the top bar.
choose OPTIONS from that drop down menu.
Go to the GENERAL tab (should be first one you see).

On that tab, about mid-page, is an option that says
"Check for new messages every ___ minutes". You set the minutes - it
probably is at 15 minutes.
Just inset from that option is another drop down mini-menu. It has a
sentence that says
"If my computer is not connected at this time, " then gives choices.
I would wager yours says to connect. be sure that the drop down choice is
set to
"DO NOT CONNECT".

That is probably going to fix your problem. If not, please post back on
when you are seeing this the most. There are other programs that will try to
auto connect, including update managers and some anti-virus programs like
Norton.

hope this helps!
