How can I stop unauthorised messages being sent from my email a/c

Unauthorised messages appear to be being sent from my email program. The
send/receive notification shows that messages are being sent when I have not
sent any, but there is no record of it in my Sent Items folder. This morning,
for example, I turned on my program and it showed 12 emails being sent. Can
anyone enlighten me as to what to do about this and what is happening?
