how can i stop unwanted programes from poping up

Help Please
i am having problems with unrequested or comanded programes by me poping up
(and running) such as Windows Meda Player, Calculator and Newsupdate these
programe help to slow down my PC I am using Microsoft WindowsXP Professional
Version 2002 Ser0vice Pack3.

Agreed, although it does sound a bit like somebody's computer has caught a
really bad cold. (Run a virus scan. What? No anti-virus software? Bummer...)
