How can I take off read only setting in document in Word 2007

I am working in Office 2007 and when I open a read only document and use
'save as' in order to cancel read only, it doesn't work and the document
retains the read only value. This happens whether I choose to open the
document as read only or not. I am unable to remove the read only value
within the document. Does anyone know how to do this?
