How can I upgrade Office 3.0 to Office XP Standard?

I bought a new Office XP standard and thought that I had a more recent
version of Office (like 97) because it came on a disk for my 2000 Gateway
computer. I actually have Office 3.0. My XP disk is an upgrade version. Is
there any way to upgrade my computer without buying Office 97?
