How can I use inking with a document that has a header in it?

I am using Word 2007, and it does not allow me to use the inking function of
my Gateway M285 tablet PC. Is there something I can do to enable the inking
function without having to delete the header? My students submit papers with
a required header, but I can't use the ink function to correct the paper.
