How change default button and numbering list

M

Marc De Smet

I've now tried different approaches for several hours but I don't find how I
can PERMANENTLY change the styles I get when I click on bullets or numbers
on the formatting toolbar. I know how to change the style (and I click 'Add
to template') but when I restart Word and create a new document, then
clicking bullets (or numbers) returns to the orignal build-in style.

In the same context: how do I change the default indent of 0.63 cm that Word
always uses? I'd like it to be 0.5 cm, also after restarting Word.

Lots of thanks (and hugs :) ) for the one who can solve this.

Kind regards

Marc

You cannot use the Numbering button (of the Formatting
toolbar) to apply a specific numbering scheme, even if you
linked numbering formatting to a paragraph style. Instead,
apply the proper style using the Styles drop-down of the
Formatting toolbar or by using the Format > Style dialog
box (Word 2000 and earlier version) or the Styles and
Formatting pane (Word 2002 and later versions). A
different approach is to create a custom toolbar button
that looks like the Numbering button but instead applies
the proper style.

Indents for a numbered style must always be set from the
numbering options; if you try to set it via paragraph
options it will not stick.

Hi Marc
If you feel adventurous, you could customise your formatting toolbar!

You need to create the numbering that you want and save it as a style
in your normal.dot.

Then go to View, Toolbars, Customise. Right click on the Numbering
button and choose to copy the button image.

Add a new button to the toolbar by going to the commands tab of the
customise dialog box and then finding styles in the Categories list.
Find your new numbering style in the Commands list and click and drag
this to the toolbar.
Then right click and select the button type to be default (as this is
image only) and then right click again and paste the numbering button
image on to your new button.

Check the button works in the way you want to. You could delete the
standard numbering button or edit the image design to remind you not
to use it any more. (I put a diagonal red line across mine).
Alternatively, if you have more than one set of numbering styles you
use fairly often you could create a whole personalised numbering
toolbar and design different buttons for each one.

If you have customised your normal template in any way, remember to
back up before making changes like this so you can always rollback if
necessary, and always save a copy of your new template somewhere safe
in case you ever need to replace your normal.dot.
