How close all?

K

kevs

Usually command W does it. Not here.

Help says shift and close all from file menu, but I don't see a close all
there, thanks!

When I hold down the shift key, then click on the File menu, the Close
Item reads Close All. If it doesn't for you, you may need to reset your
menu.

If you'd rather always have it available, you can drag the FileCloseAll
command to a menu or toolbar using Tools/Customize/Customize
Toolbars/Menus...

That's a "Second-level" command. The second-level commands are not visible
on the menus unless you hold down the shift key before opening the menu.

The standard Macintosh close all shortcut is cmd-opt-W
It works in Word here.

Command option, W, not working for me Elliot, and that was my last question
about keystroke.

I did get the menu to show close all

And I well add close all to toolbar, thanks for those!

You may have assigned that keystroke to something else? Or maybe I made
the substitution here to make Word be more Mac-like and forgot I did
it.

If you want your copy of Word to execute a close all with cmd-opt-W (or
something else) then:-
Tools » Customize » Customize keyboard...
Categories : File
Commands: FileCloseAll
Press new shortcut key: (get your fingers all tangled up here with your
new command keystroke combo) Assign, OK

Hi Elliott -

forgot I did it.

That must be the case. Just out of curiosity I tried the Cmd+Opt+W here
(which doesn't work) & also took a look in the Kybd shortcuts. FileCloseAll
doesn't have a default stroke here and I know I haven't removed it.

Thanks. I'm too scared to press "reset all...". I have no idea what's
Word's and what's mine any more. I had cmd-opt-W in both accounts I
tried, but no memory of where the shortcut came from, and not much idea
of where it is stored. All I know is you can't deal with shortcuts in
the organizer.

I've never gotten used to using that particular shortcut.

It's mentioned in Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, but it's
interesting that this shortcut to make an application more Mac-like
doesn't work in Apple apps like TextEdit, Automator, ScriptEditor, Grab,
Terminal, iTunes, Console and Sherlock.

Must be leftover from pre-OS X. I got used to it, so also re-assigned
cmd-opt-W to close all in Word, and cmd-opt-S to Save All in Word and
possibly other applications. No idea it wasn't default. :) Cmd-opt-W
closes all in Safari.

And Finder. And doing it in either is a real PITA for me since I have
thumbs that on occasion hit just enough of the OPT key to close all the
windows. Usually happens when I have 8 or 10 tabs open in a window in
Safari.

Interesting to read of everyone's idiosyncrasies through something like
this.

I, of course, have none... :-|
