How come MS Office hangs when it runs virus scan on command Open?

I have MS Office 2003 Student- Teacher edition, and I have Norton Internet
Security 2005. But it seems that when I open a word document with Word, an
excel document in Excel, these applications state "Running Virus Scan" but
nothing seems to happen even after minutes on end.

Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton
