how come the update downloads are taking so long?

Probably due to high traffic.

Keep in mind that it was only released yesterday.

If you want a faster download speed, then maybe you should wait a week or two for the traffic to slow down.

Here's an idea:
If you have more than 1 computer to update, download the update file(s) manually and burn them to a CD-R. Then
use the CD-R to update the other computer(s). Now you wouldn't need to use Microsoft Update or Office Update
site on each computer where it will download the same file(s) burned on the CD-R.

If you are using Windows 2000, then you will need to use CD burning software (such as Nero Burning Rom) which
came with your CD-R/CD-RW drive.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not have any mirror that I am aware of where you could download these updates
from.

All I know about is their FTP site, but it does not have files found at the Microsoft Download Center
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/).
