I've copied outlook.pab from Xp and pasted it to C:\user\application
data\local\microsoft\outlook in Vista, but addresses did not copy. prior to
that I had changed Outlook in Vista to show Personal address Book as the
address book for Outlook and even added a typed addess successfully, but
ended up with only that one address in the address book

What version of Outlook is this?
Outlook pre Outlook 2003 is not fully compatible with Vista, and depending
what version the problems increase

In reply to what version- it's Outllok 2003, SP2 and works OK other than that address book problem. It appears that if I add the addresses one by one, I'd be Ok there, too, but a lot of work.

Why are you using a pab? OL hasnt used the pab since OL2k(?) It uses
Contacts
Within OL,File>Import>another program or file>Personal address book
Select Contacts as the destination (You may have to map imported fields)
You may have to 'tidy up' your Contacts after the process, as duplicate
entries may be made owing to the limitations of the pab.

The process is explained here
http://www.windowsitlibrary.com/Content/191/16/1.html

Once done select select properties of Contacts and select show as an address
book
