How create .htaccess file for 301 redirects

Hi All,
I have just re-designed a site to use .php pages (rather than the previous
..htm).
So I want to re-direct any calls for page_name.htm to its successor
page_name.php.

Best way seems to use a .htaccess file (the site is hosted on Apache)...
when I ran into FP problems below!

FP wont let me create a ".htaccess" file, so I searched this forum for a
solution.
I read that I should copy the remote file to local, put my 301 re-directs IN
FRONT of any FP code, copy it back to the remote .... oh! and then hope it
works ;-),

But using FP I can't see the .htaccess file listed (but I can see it exists
if I use an FTP client)
PS - I DO have "show fidden files selected" already.

Can someone help me with how to create the ".htaccess" file please.
Will it work?
Is there a better alternative?

NO.

Put your redirect codes AFTER any FrontPage codes. FrontPage is very
particular about this (at least in my experience).
