How do a view messages in the reading pane - it's open but blank?

I am using Microsoft Office 2007 with Vista. When I open Outlook mail,
somehow now the reading pane is blank. It used to be that I could highlight
the email and thet would show up in the reading pane so I would not have to
open the email to read it. Now, the pane is open but completely blank. I
can't figure out why it is now blank or how to fix it.
