I need to auto-respond to email but I only have a POP account (not Exchange
Server). I'm using Outlook 2003. Does ANYONE know how I can do this?
Thanks, Olaf

How to emulate the Out of Office Assistant in Microsoft Outlook
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311107

Means you have to:
- Leave your computer always powered on. Get a big UPS.
- Configure recovery options in Windows to reboot after a crash (so it
could just get stuck in a reboot loop if what caused it to crash keeps
making it crash).
- Use auto-login so Windows logins under your account after rebooting
from a crash. Also means anyone can use your computer.
- Leave Windows always loaded.
- Leave Outlook always loaded. This is client software and makes for a
flaky server program.
- Define the rule mentioned in the KB article.
- Only works for e-mails that get past your e-mail provider's anti-spam
filter (since those won't be available to Outlook).

Have you actually checked that your e-mail provider does not provide an
auto-responder so you can run this up on their server?

I can get Outlook to send an autoresponse for mails arriving at the default
POP3 account, but I have 4 accounts in Outlook and it won't autorespond to
the others. The settings window has an "Apply to all accounts" box but it's
greyed out. Any suggestions?

Yes, that was my first thought, but the ISP does not offer autoresponse
unfortunately. Very close in Outlook, but that "Apply to all accounts" box
being greyed out is a real bummer.....

Sorry, I meant "email service provider". Good news to hear that rules apply
to all accounts, maybe there are other settings within each account that I
need to rectify - will check now.
I want the response to go out from each account that receives mail.
Thanks for the help - and the very fast responses!

Do each of these mail accounts have its own maibox on the server? Do these
accounts all use the same mail server? Do they each have separate
usernames/passwords? Are they all included in the send/receive group?

All accounts are with the same email provider but have their own domain names
(I mean the part after @) and each has its own mailbox addresses, username
and password.
They are all enabled in send/receive and all drop into the same inbox (ie
not separate profiles).

Odd. Then you should be able to create a rule that responds no matter what
account receives the mail.

Hi Brian,
If I want to reply to emails from a specific account, does that account have
to be the default account? Thanks for your help.
Sincerely, David Druckerman
