I am not too well upon the inner workings but I believe that it is something
like, if you open a file directly from a floppy the computer does not
actually open the file, it marks it as unreadable and creates a copy of the
file and it isthis copy that is opened. If anything goes wrong with the
process then you will not have an original file to go back to so you will
have lost your data. By copying it you will always have the
original,untouched file, to go back to.
