How do I add and remove columns to/from my contacts list

D

Dick

I am a long time user of Outlook but I just upgraded from Office 2000 to
2003. My Outlook Contacts list is not at all what I prefer.

1. Not everyone in my Contacts list has an e-mail address yet when I add
these individuals they are not visible unless I put in an e-mail address
(real or fake). What can I do to change this?
2. The columns that are displayed are not in keeping with my work needs. I
need the Name (sorted last, first) their e-mail address, and phone number. I
do not need the Display name or e-mail type.
Is there a way I can customize the way the Contact List looks.

Are you referring to the view of your Contacts folder or the layout of the
address book? The latter cannot be modified.

I am not using the Address Book at all just the Contacts List. (The term
Address Book-is from my years of usint the old Outlook programs). I am using
ONLY the Contacts List. And need it to read the way I would use it.

Thank you.

1) The contacts folder shows every item unless you have a filter turned on.
Check View | Arrange By | Current View | Customize Current View | Filter.

2) View | Arrange By | Current View | Customize Current View | Fields

I followed your directions but I have not been able to get Tools (withough
Contacts open) to allow me to set filters. I can set them for other functions
but not the Contacts list. Opening Contacts was logical but opening it and
clicking tools only allows me to toggle the tool bar off and on. (BTW I
turned my Win Firewall off in case it was causing problems ).

What am I missing.

Tools? Where does the Tools menu come in? I certainly didn't mention it.

You need to be looking at a particular folder if you want to work with its
views.

Indeed you didn't my mistake.

Everything I entered I entered into my Contacts List. I put nothing in my
Address Book. When I write a new e-mail message I click on the Address Book
Icon on the Task Bar. That is the view I wanted to change but apparently
cannot. What I did do was to drag the columns to eliminate 'Display Name' and
'Mail Type' What I eanted to achieve was to shoe the Name, E-Mail Address
and, Telephone Number. Apparently this I cannot do so I'll have to accept
what I have and work a little differently.

Thanks for your help.

Correct. You cannot modify the layout of the address book except, in Outlook
2003, to resize the entire window.

You can, however, customize the view of your Contacts folder.
