There are several ways to do this. Starting with the very easiest (to be
used only if this is a very simple, perhaps throwaway, document):
1. Insert | Page Numbers. Clear the check box for "Show number on first
page," then click Format... and choose "Start at" 0. This will work only if
the document is a single section and you're using arabic numbers. The Insert
| Page Numbers dialog should be avoided except for the very simplest
documents.
2. View | Header and Footer. This will put you in the header pane. If you
want the page number in the footer, click the Switch Between Header and
Footer button on the Header and Footer toolbar. Use the Insert Page Number
button to insert your page number; position it using paragraph alignment or
the built-in tab stops. Click on the Format Page Number button and choose
"Start at" 1. Click on the Page Setup button and check the box for
"Different first page." This will give you a separate First Page
Header/Footer that will be empty.
3. If you need a separate section for the first page for any other reason
(such as vertically centering a title page), then, after inserting your Next
Page section break, View | Header and Footer in Section 2. Click "Same as
Previous" or "Link to Previous" to unlink the Section 2 header or footer
from the one in Section 1. Insert the page number as in (2) above and set it
to start at 1. The Section 1 header/footer will be empty.
