Your Custom Dictionary has either gone missing or is not enabled.
Look up Custom Dictionary in the Word 2004 Help: there is a procedure there
for adding or enabling the custom dictionary.
It may be disabled because the language of your custom dictionary does not
match the language of the text you are now typing. "English" is not close
enough: it must match exactly -- there are 29 flavours of English.
It is best to assign "No language" to the Custom Dictionary, so it then
works regardless of the text language, and you don't get the current
problem.
Of course, that doesn't work if you need to work in multiple incompatible
foreign languages: then you need a new custom dictionary for each language.
But don't create multiple custom dictionaries unless you really have to:
maintaining them is a pain!!
Hope this helps
