How do I adjust the space between slides in PowerPoint?

The gray space between the slides in my PowerPoint presentation in
"Normal/panes view" is huge and the rulers are set up incorrectly. How can I
fix this?

Usually this is caused by an object (maybe invisible) placed well off the
slide area.

To check zoom out to 10% and ctrl A to select all. Any shape will show up.
