How do I animate only the selected text?

In Powerpoint 2002 (on PC), I was able to animate the text I highlighted without animating the other text in a text box. This was the default when choosing Custom Animation with highlighted text.

Is there a way to do this quickly (or set it as the default) in 2008?

I understand how to adjust the animation of the text within the box so that it will do I what I want. What I want is for it to be quick/automatic like it used to be. Right now I'm creating multiple text boxes to avoid editing in the Custom Animation window, but this is also a waste of time compared to the old way.

I'm looking for the answer to this question too. It's such a basic feature when giving a presentation that I can't understand why it isn't the default setting.

In the past I've never had to give a presentation to any more than ten people, but this one (my first on Office 2008) has to be ready for someone to give in front of 2,200 people and the mainstream media. I'm thinking of making one slide telling people not to bother upgrading to 2008.
