How do I assign a shortcut key to an often-used word or symbol?

I often type the same words and symbols in Word documents. How can I assign a
shortcut key to them? I use Office 2007. In the late 1990's, I seem to recall
assigning Function keys to the symbol "US$" which I used a lot at the time.

Frankly for three characters such as US$ a shortcut seems a waste of effort
and something else to learn, but for longer phrases you should investigate
autocorrect.

Select the text, including the symbol ("US$"), save it as autotext using a
one-key name you will remember (maybe "d"). Then when you want to insert
US$, type "d" then press F3 and Word will substitute the autotext for the
name. This works better than autocorrect because you choose when to make
the correction. I use it to insert § (autotext named "s") and ¶ (autotext
named "p) on a regular basis. Much easier than inserting a symbol.
