How do I assign text to a layer

I want to put text labels on a diagram I have made in visio, but on a
separate layer than the shapes so that I can turn them on and off. How do I
do that?

Select the shapes and choose Format > Layer from the menu. Enter the name
of a new layer and click OK twice. Now you can manipulate the layer
visibility by going to View > Layer Properties.
