How do I avoid data conversion errors when importing from excel

I want to use excel data by linking. The columns of data has number
like such as 028 text entries. The link Wizard takes this to be a
number. Since the excel file changes I cannot do a import.
Nevertheless I tried to import with the text type for the field.
However this time the wizard made an exit without any import. This
seems to be a bug in the wizard. It should allow one to set the
field type. There seems to be a check box for that. But it is
dimmed. How can I invoke this. Can some one with experience in excel
data please help.
