how do I avoid getting already downloaded mails

I keep on receiving e-mails of older dates, that I have already received
earlier. This keeps my mailbox full of already read messages
How do I avoid this????

I have experienced this problem when using POP to check email from the
same account but one two different machines. Or maybe it was
webmail+POP on the same account. At any rate, I looked up my ISP's
directions for configuring my account to use IMAP, and the problem
resolved itself.
