how do i avoid truncation when importing text file into MS access

I tried to import text file into access, where one of the fields has xxzzz
format. Here, the xx represents a padding zero, and zzz represent the actual
text character. Every time I import / link this text file to an access table,
however, the padding zero (xx) is always truncated. So on the target field, I
only see zzz. Any suggestion on how I can avoid the truncation? I've tried
setting the target field as memo field but I still get the same result.

If you are importing to a new table, it is difficult to maintain the
formatting you want. I always suggest creating a table and setting the data
types and formats you want. Then import into this existing table. Your
format should be maintained. Of course, you have to delete the old data in
the table before you do a new import.

I always put a phony row of data as the first row below column titles and add
pure text in the fields that must be text like zip codes and telephone
numbers. Then I remove the phony record from the Access table.
