how do I back up Outlook email accounts?

Y

Yellowtorrish

I back up my Outlook details regularly using the "export" pst file system. I
can use this method to back up email inbox, contacts, calendar etc. BUT....I
cannot see how to back up all my various (14 - don't ask why!!) email account
details, including logon names, passwords, POP and SMTP account details etc.

This is very frustrating, as if I do a clean install (usually every 6
months) as "good housekeeping" excersize, I have to spend ages making notes
of all the account details and then manually re-install them.

I see from searching the internet that there are various proprietry progs
(such as Outsource-XP),, bu does Microsoft provide anything?

Any suggestions welcome.

Why? Just make a copy of your pst file when Outlook is closed.

Thanks for your various replies, but.....

..pst files only back up information such as I have described above such as
contacts, emails (inbox, sent items etc), calendar and so forth.

..pst files DO NOT contain data relating to email account settings (name,
password, POP3 & smtp addresses, outgoing server details, etc).
It is this information, because I have multiple email addresses, that I wish
to back-up.

Thanks,
James

Did you look into the articles that I suggested? Here they are again. See if
these contain the help you need.

See "How to back up Outlook settings files" in this article:

Also, if you happen to have Office 2003, this article would be of interest:

Well, I think I have at least half the answer, thanks.

according to your link to "Check this page for more info:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm "
the following nfo is given. Also, in the sales blurb of one of the utility
progs mentioned, .pst file do not contain account info - which explains why I
can't back up using the methods described by others/microsoft.

"Account information is held in the user's Windows registry, not in a file."

I also discovered that Office XP (2002) contains the Save My Settings
wizard. I'll run a test later this morning to see how it performs. I'll post
back with the results.

Test Results: The wizard did not appear to save or least it didn't restore
any account information to a new installation of Outlook 2002.

I hope you're still checking this thread. I just used the File and Setting
Transfer (FAST) wizard from Windows XP to transfer my Outlook data from a
Windows 2000 Pro system to a Windows XP pro system. The account info was
transferred along with the all contents of the PST file, but the passwords did
not make the trip. I believe this is by design.

For your scenario, you'd have to make a custom backup, tailoring it to just the
MS Office apps and also point to the location of the user's Archive.pst file.
You would have to do this for each user, assuming they are using unique
profiles.

Here's a link with some good info on FAST:

To be honest, I think I may as well use the proprietry software that's
available. I have tried Outsource-XP (I don't work for them!) and their free
version seems to work fine in doing the job. Many thanks for your
contributions.
James.
