OS 10.4.10
Ibook G4
1.5 GB Ram
Word 2004

I got a software update message offering a word update. My ³about word² now
says I have v. 11.3. I had v. 10.4.10

After the update, I had to restart. Then at one point I think I was
offerred something like, "do you want to return to default". I think I
pressed yes, and I think this is the source of the problem. I just didn¹t
know what I was doing, or didn¹t remember that from before.

Everything has gone back to starting from scratch. Everything. I have to
fill in my name and addresses, etc. I have files still there, but I don¹t
know where iPhoto pictures are. I have backed up both on a jump drive, and
on an external hard drive, so I¹ve probably lost everything created since
backing up the last time. The irony is that I was about to apply all the
information I received from Cybertaz and others on how to create a
bullet-proof back up system

My question is, what¹s the method for bringing all the backed up stuff back
into my computer?

Thanks, Rafael

Hi Rafael,

It's not really clear what happened--but:

"About Word" showing 11.3--that's correct.
Used to have 10.4.10--no, that was the version number for OS X, not for
Word/Office.

Considering that confusion:
1) are you sure that it was a Word update? The program Software Update
is by Apple, and would update your OS, not Office. Now you probably have
10.4.11 on the apple/about this mac dialog.

2) can you remember whether the "return to default" message came within
Word or an Office program, or whether it might have been an OS dialog.

It sounds like all this is probably an OS issue.

Hi Daiya,

In the log in System Profiler it has this,

"2007-12-06 20:56:19 -0800: Installed "Mac OS X Update (PowerPC)" (10.4.11)"

so that would be an OS update. I wasn't really looking. It was late. Now
I have OS 10.4.11. It didn't have anything to do with Word.

The "return to default" message had to have been an OS dialog because now I
see (profiler) that the update was an OS update. I don't remember /when/
the "return to default" choice came up. Why would anyone want to start over
like this? It's awful, and not what I was looking forward to when I woke up
this morning.

Given that, can you guide me through setting up and how to bring back the
stuff I have backed up, or should I go to another source than Word NG?

Thanks, Rafael

Daiya

I guess I'm asking a rather simplistic question. I can go to the apple
support discussions and get some help. I've never re-loaded total backup
and I hope to get bookmarks and address books & auto fills. But if you have
anything to add, that's fine with me.

I'm sorry, I haven't a clue, never even heard of a "return to default"
dialog in OS X. With luck, the people at Apple Discussions will know.
