How do I cancel columns

Q

Qal

I used a two column layout in a document once. Now every
time I opened a new cocument it is automatically split
into two columns. How do I change the default back into
the normal one column layout. Thanks

Thanks Doug for the tip. I followed the instructions
suggested in the web site. I couldn't find
the 'Normal.dot' word document mentioned in the
instructions. May be it is under different name file in
Windows xp. Any other suggestions?

No, in Windows XP it's a hidden file. In Explorer, choose Tools | Folder
Options, and on the View tab, check the radio button for "Show hidden files
and folders." Then look again.

Thanks Suzanne for your reply. I had checked all the
hidden files to unhide them, including Windows system
files and I searched again for the 'Normal.dot' file. It
isn't there! May be its name has accidently been changed.
any other suggestions please?

Hi Qal,

No, it's name would not have been changed. If it had, you would not have
the problem.

You will probably find it in the following folder:

c:\documents and settings\[username]\application data\microsoft\templates

where username is the name that the computer knows you by.
