how do I change administrator restrictions to allow web page previ

T

The Perks

I am trying preview a web page I am creating in Publisher.

Whenever I go to File then Web Page Preview I get a red crossed box with the
message: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on
this computer. Please contract you system administrator.

As I am the only person using the computer I thought I was the system
administrator and I have no idea what settings to change.

Help please.

Try rebooting your computer and then opening your Pub file again. This time
when you try to preview the page see if you don't get a yellow warning
line/bar across the top of the browser that says in effect that IE has
restricted this webpage from running scripts or ActiveX controls, etc...and
"Click her for options". Click the options and allow the blocked content.
See if that allows you to preview your site.

If this doesn't work, please post back with the version of Publisher and IE
you are using.

David,

I'm having the same problem, and I tried what you suggested but did not see
the yellow warning line/bar in IE. Here is my configuration:

Publisher 2003 (11.6565.6568) SP2
IE Version 8.0.6001.18702

I'm also using the ZoneAlarm Security Suite on this computer, along with
Zone Alarm Force Field. Not sure if those have any impact on this issue, but
thought I'd list them just in case.

Please advise - thanks.

Are you getting the same error message as the OP? If not what are you
getting?

What happens if you turn off Zone Alarm? I have no idea what "Zone Alarm
Force Field" is, but disable it too.

If you publish your web files to your hard drive, and then double click the
index.htm file does IE open the file? If not how about opening IE, going to
File > Open and browsing to the index.htm file?

Have you installed the service patches for Publisher 2003? With Pub open
look under Help and then About Publisher and note the SP. Install at least
SP2.

David,

Thanks for your response. Further information:

1. The message is the same as the previous post. Here is the wording: "This
operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
Please contact your system administrator."

2. The index.htm file is not opened by Explorer when I clicked it - it opens
in Notepad. However, the page does open correctly when I browse to it using
Explorer.

3. I turned off both ZoneAlarm and Forcefield. No luck.

4. I tried to check for updates, but received the same "this operation has
been cancelled" message when I did that. However, doesn't the SP2 at the end
of the version I listed for you in my previous post mean that Service Pack 2
is already installed?

Please let me know any other ideas. Thanks again.

Perhaps you need to re-associate IE with .htm files...

Go to that index.htm file and right click > Open with > Choose program. In
the Open with dialog choose IE and then be sure to check the option of
"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" . Now when you
double click any .htm file it should open in IE automatically, and hopefully
you will be able to preview the web page in Publisher. Let us know.

And yes, you did say that Publisher had the SP2...I missed that as I was
brainstorming possible solutions.

Thanks again for your response David.

I tried your suggestion, but still receiving the message.

I did receive the yellow warning bar across the top of IE when I clicked the
..htm file after selecting the "always use the selected program" option, and I
chose to allow the blocked content. Still receiving the message.

Let me know what else to try.

I am out of good ideas. The next thing I would check is in IE8 under tools
and internet options to see if IE is set as your default browser and default
html editor, and look for some other setting in IE that might be causing
this problem. Then I would probably try a repair of Publisher. Go to Help >
Office Diagnostics and repair the installation. Have your Office disks
handy.

I suppose you could also post this question in the IE8 forum and perhaps
someone there will recognize this error. Be sure to copy the error message
exactly.

Sorry I don't have a better answer.

Also post the operating system you are using as a setting in that may be
causing this issue.

David,

Think I figured this out. It wasn't working because I had created a small
form on the site. I didn't realize until I read your notes that a form cannot
be previewed.

I guess it was the wording of the message that threw me off - made it sound
as if something else was wrong (if the message had said "forms cannot be
previewed", this would have been a quicker process.)

Anyway, I just published the site via HTTP and tested the form, and it works.

Happy ending - thanks for your help.

John,

Thanks for posting back. I was disappointed that we had not figured out an
answer to your problem. And yes if you have a form that needs FPSE to work,
then you cannot test it on your local computer as the FPSE are on the web
server.

I did read in another newsgroup that you can get this error if you have
installed Chrome and then uninstalled it. But it sounds like you figured it
out.

Once again thanks for taking the time to post your solution. That way we all
learn.
